SLIMZEE
If you’ve ever been cornered in a Bow pub by a tubby white bloke claiming he was once the most exciting DJ in Britain and ignored him, assuming he was a drunk ex-builder, then shame on you, because it could have been DJ Slimzee. Much as he doesn’t look it, Slimzee was one of Rinse FM’s founding fathers along with, amongst others, Geenius, Wiley and Target, and was for years the grime DJ; headlining raves and putting the rest of the bill to shame with his stacks of exclusives, and mixing in what is still almost certainly the best grime set of all time – his Sidewinder bonus tape with Wiley and Dizzee Rascal from 2003. Over the last three years hearing Slimzee has become an all-too-rare occurrence; in 2005 he received “what was thought to be the first ASBO of its kind by being banned from any roof or building over four storeys without permission”, after receiving “a three-year conditional discharge at Thames Magistrates Court after admitting operating a pirate radio station and causing £10, 000 of damage by erecting broadcast equipment”, and according to a 2006 encounter with Chantelle Fiddy, redirected his priorities to fatherhood – more excited by eighties music than grime and funky house. However, in recent months the man formally known as Slimfast has been playing dates again (albeit many of them not in London), and it seems to have all led up to the 22nd August – the date of Rinse FM’s fourteenth birthday bash at the End, London. Slimzee headlines, along with Wiley, God’s Gift, Major Ace and Plague as a reformed version of legendary garage crew Pay As U Go, whose single ‘Know We’, produced by Wiley, is constantly cited as one of the vital moments in garage’s transition to grime
